The completion of the rehabilitation of road E79 in the Blagoevgrad area marks the end of one of the important stages in the improvement of the transport infrastructure in southwestern Bulgaria. The project covers the section from kilometer 356+455 to kilometer 372+806, with a total length of 24 kilometers. As part of the activities, a completely new asphalt pavement was laid, the horizontal and vertical markings were renewed, a new shoulder was laid, and the road lighting was restored—for the first time in nearly four decades. These improvements not only increase traffic safety and comfort, but also extend the road’s service life.
European route E79 is one of the most important transport arteries in Bulgaria. It connects the cities of Vidin, Vratsa, Botevgrad, Sofia, Pernik, and Blagoevgrad before continuing to Greece via the “Kulata” border crossing. The road is part of Trans-European Transport Corridor IV, which connects Budapest and Athens and is a key axis for trade and tourism between Bulgaria and the rest of Europe. The rehabilitated section in the Blagoevgrad area is also of strategic importance as an alternative route to the “Struma” Motorway, providing better passability and a higher level of safety in cases of heavy traffic or temporary traffic restrictions on the “Struma” Motorway.
