The Romanian Ministry of Transport has issued the construction permit for the first section of the mountainous part of the A8 “Union” motorway – a project defined as historic for the country. The key contractor in the project is the Bulgarian company “Groma Hold”, which is part of the international consortium tasked with the implementation of the site.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania has issued a construction permit for section 1D “Joseni – Ditreau” of the A8 “Union” motorway. According to the Romanian National Road Investment Company (CNIR), construction activities led by one of the largest Bulgarian road construction companies “Groma Hold” could begin within about a month.
State Secretary for Transport Horașiu Cosma described the event as a “historic moment” for the A8 motorway. This is the first construction site on the mountainous section between Miercurea-Ciuc and Legin, the longest mountain highway in Romania, and the first motorway ever to be built in Harghita County.
The project is being implemented by the Danlin XXL – Groma Hold – Intertranscom Impex consortium, selected after an international tender procedure in which a total of five candidates participated, including some of the largest construction companies in Romania.
According to Horacio Cosma, the construction site is already fully prepared. Two concrete plants and an asphalt plant are operating on site, over 140 construction machines are ready for work, and a specialized factory produces bridge beams for future facilities every day. More than 150 workers will be engaged in the first stage of construction, and their number will increase as the project develops.
The section is 14.4 kilometers long and includes 18 bridges and overpasses, three viaducts for wildlife crossing, a road junction at Joseni, serving areas with commercial areas, gas stations and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The implementation period is 34 months – 10 months of design and 24 months of construction.
“The reputation of an infrastructure company is built on the trust of the clients who entrust it with the implementation of strategic projects. The fact that Romanian state institutions officially launch one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the country with the key participation of “Groma Hold” is the highest recognition of the professional capacity, engineering expertise and consistent work of our company over the years. This trust is hard earned – with proven results, investments in people and technology and successful implementation of complex infrastructure projects. This is precisely the assessment that has the greatest value for us,” says Viktor Velev, CEO of “Groma Hold”.
The A8 motorway is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Romania. Its mountainous section provides for over 110 kilometers of highway, numerous tunnels, viaducts and complex engineering structures, which will provide a direct connection between Transylvania and Moldova and is among the largest transport investments in Romania and the region.
